Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that is composed of 2 oxygen atoms, bonded to a single carbon atom. The chemical formula of carbon dioxide is CO2. It is a gas at standard pressure and temperature and it is found in the earth’s atmosphere in the same state. CO2 is a trace gas and it makes up 0.0039% of the atmosphere.
Sources of Carbon Dioxide
The carbon cycle consists of the process of photosynthesis in algae, plants and cyanobacteria. In this process, sunlight, water and carbon dioxide are absorbed and carbohydrate energy is created. Oxygen is released after the absorption of carbon dioxide. During the process of respiration, the contrast occurs. Oxygen is taken in and carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. Other sources of carbon dioxide include geysers, hot springs and volcanoes from which, this gas is emitted during combustion. Carbon dioxide is also released from carbonated rocks during dissolution.
