About ICD 9
The ICD 9 is an abbreviation for International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision. The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) has been established to encourage international comparability in the collection, processing, classification, and presentation of mortality statistics. This also includes providing a standard format for reporting multiple causes of death on the death certificate. The reported conditions will then be translated into medical codes with the use of the classification structure and the selection and modification rules that are found in the applicable revision of the ICD, which is published by the World Health Organization. These coding rules greatly enhance the viability of mortality statistics by giving preference to specific categories, by combining conditions, and by systematically choosing a single cause of death from a reported number of conditions. The single chosen cause for tabulation is considered the underlying cause of death, and the other reported causes are the nonunderlying causes of death. The amalgamation of underlying and nonunderlying causes is the multiple causes of death. The ICD has been revised over time to add any changes in the medical field. Up until now, there have been 10 revisions of the ICD.
- The U.S. established its own classification and coding rules for Human immunodeficiency virus infection or HIV mortality effective during the 1987 data year.
- The ICD-9 is no longer available in print format. Volume I, which was modified for United States purposes, is available. Additionally, the most detailed tabulation list of causes used in the United States can be identified at the beginning of the mortality worktable GMWKI.
- A related classification, the International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification or ICD-9-CM, is implemented in assigning codes to diagnoses related to inpatient, outpatient, and physician office utilization in the United Stated Volume 3 procedures is used in assigning codes related to inpatient procedures. The ICD-9-CM is based on the ICD but allows for additional morbidity detail and is updated on a yearly basis.
