The acronym RSPCA stands for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. It is the oldest aid organization originating in England and Wales in the early 19th century. The RSPCA formerly called The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is the biggest UK based, worldwide charitable trust engaged in activities for promoting the wellbeing of animals in the world.
In 1824, the work of the Society was launched after MP Richard Martin pioneered the first Anticruelty Bill to advocate for safety of animals, even those that were domesticated. MP Martin was nicknamed “Humanity Dick” as he became the one of the originator of the SPCA. In its beginning the Society’s had virtually no sensitivity to animal rights so the initiative was ground breaking in more ways than one.
The Society received royal notoriety when Queen Elizabeth extended her support by becoming benefactor for the organization. It was therefore renamed to its current name. In order to create well-needed impact, the Society’s goal was to increase public awareness on the issue of protecting animal rights. Its success to this end was marked by almost 200 recorded convictions for breaches of the Animal Cruelty Bill.
To carry forward its mandate, the Society utilized the services of a Committee to inspect butchery houses and other associated places where animals were likely to suffer mistreatment. Later the office of the Inspector was created with responsibility for seeking out offenders and ensuring compliance with the animal protection laws. This office has come to be synonymous with the work of the Society.
The most important work though of the Society has been the implementation of legislation for the protection of animal rights; namely amendments to the Cruelty to Animals Act of 1835 and the passing of laws to manage scientific tests carried on animals and make illegal the practice baiting. Additionally Animal Protection Act was introduced in 1911.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has also motivated the establishment of a chapter in Australia and other animal welfare organizations which assist with enforcing animal cruelty prevention. The organization is supported by free will funding which has contributed to the wide expansion of its work. In addition to enforcing animal protection laws, the Society also runs animal places of safety and clinics.
Local branches of the RSPCA also have wildlife centres which provide care animals at high risk. Opportunities are also capitalized with the establishment charity shops which provide for fund raising to aid the work of the Society. This spirit is further extended to the service of those involved with the Society’s work. This includes the Regional Managers and Superintendents, Chief Inspectors, Inspectors, Animal Welfare Officers and Animal Collection Officers.
