What does WIFI stand for?

WIFI is the acronym for wireless local area network: a local area network that uses high frequency radio signals to transmit and receive data over distances of a few. It can also be seen as a group of wireless local area network (WLAN) devices according to the IEEE 802.11 standards. Wi-Fi devices are installed in several smart phones, printers, video game console private computers and other nonessentials. Practically all palm sized computers or laptops have the Wi-Fi device installed in them.

WIFI is a trademark of the WIFI Alliance which is a global not for profit group of companies that supports WLAN technology and accredits products as WI-FI certified once they conform to certain standards of interoperability. At times costs associated with the certification process hinders the certification of some IEEE 802.11 compliant device. Devices that do not have the Wi-Fi logo are not necessarily unsuited with WI-FI certified devices.

The following devices that can be connected via WI-FI are able to connect to the internet as long as it is within the range of a wireless network that is connected to the internet:

  • Video game console
  • Mobile phone
  • MP3 Player
  • PDA
  • PC

Coverage can be accessed from access points known as hotspots. A hotspot is a physical spot or location that provides internet access over a wireless LAN through the use of a shared internet connection and a single router. The hotspot area can be a room with wireless solid walls or it could be a large area covering many square miles with overlapping access points. WI-FI technology also supplies mesh networks in some countries. Mesh networks refer to a type of communication network that consists of radio nodes that are systematized in a mesh topology.

WI-FI is restricted to offices and homes but it can grant public access via WI-FI hotspots which can be free of charge or be made available through a variety of service providers.

Free hotspot is one of the things businesses and organizations use to attract their clients. Some of these businesses and organizations are hotels, restaurants, malls, and airports to name a few. Any one wishing to supply services or to endorse business in a particular geographical area usually offers free WI-FI access.

DSL modems or cable modems with a WI-FI access point are often located in homes or other locations and they supply internet working and internet access to the wireless or cable operated devices that are connected to them. WI-FI devices can also be used to connect two clients without the aid of a router. Another benefit to the WI-FI is the fact that it connects one to the internet anywhere and at anytime.
