What does WII stand for?

The acronym Wii which when pronounced sounds like the pronoun “we” means Wireless Inter-Interface. The Wii concept was developed in 2001 by Nintendo’s game designer Shigeru Miyamoto an idea which introduced a new form of player interaction. Four years later the concept developed further, producing the Wii Remote which was made popular by Nintendo and is packaged as a home video game console. Wii was also designed to reach a broader demographic than its predecessors Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3.
The Wii has both internal and external memory storage capabilities which allows for the storing of uploaded photographs, backing up of saved game information as well as downloading Virtual Console and WiiWare games. The technical specifications of the console have not been shared with the public; however, certain information that was leaked reveal that the Wii could definitely be an extension of the Nintendo Game cube.

The Wii console has a remote that allows for wireless control in three dimensions. It also has the capability to receive and update messages over the internet while it is in standby mode. This feature is known as WiiConnect24.
The console contains a number of internal features made available from its hardware and firmware components. Firmware is a term often used to denote the fixed, usually rather small, programs and data structures that internally control various electronic devices. The Wii hardware allows for extendibility through expansion ports while the firmware and some other pieces of software can receive periodic updates via the WiiConnect24 service.
The Wii is more physically demanding than other game consoles. One medical journal reported that the Wii actually causes the user to use more energy which may be beneficial to the player in terms of weight loss however, it should not replace regular exercise.

Why Wii

Nintendo contends that having the two “i”characters in lower case gives the impression of two people standing beside each other which would then represent two players as well as represent the Wii Remote and Nunchuck. Several reasons and explanations have been given as to the choice of name for the console however, most persons realize that upon pronouncing the Wii it sounds a lot like “we” thereby impressing that it is for everyone. Wii is quite easy to remember whether you speak English or not, thus this eliminates the need to abbreviate or confuse it with anything else.

The Wii is the smallest home console developed by Nintendo to date. It has the capabilities to be placed vertically or horizontally and is said to be the lightest of the company’s three major seventh generation consoles.

The Wii Remote is the primary controller for the console as it has built in accelerometers and infrared detection which helps with the sensing position in 3D space when it is pointed at the sensor bar. Users are able to control the game using physical gestures as well as pressing the buttons to play.
